Sam combines a lifetime of experience in general construction with experience in working with natural materials including cob, slip straw, and earthen based plasters. His lifelong apprenticeship with his father, who is an established mason and general contractor, has resulted in extensive experience with stone masonry, woodworking, earthworks and general construction. Sam is particularly experienced in designing and building permeable stone hardscapes and retaining walls.
Sam was introduced to natural building at a young age when his family used it as a means to build their family homestead. The main building material for these homes is the abundant clay soil under their feet as well as locally sourced sand and straw.
He sees great potential in natural building practices as a means to provide people with environmentally friendly building alternatives. Earthen materials are not only a sustainably harvested and readily available resource but provide many benefits including fire resistance, humidity regulation, and carbon sequestration. In addition, the aesthetic qualities of natural building are uniquely elegant, and the allure of a well-built structure or renovation is hard to deny.
Sam resides in Nevada County with his wife and daughter.
